Galle is theadministrative capital of Southern Province, Sri Lanka. Galle is the fourth largest city in<br \/>\nSri Lanka after the capital Colombo, Kandy and Jaffna. Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th<br \/>\ncentury, during the Dutch<\/p>\n<p>colonial period. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in South and Southeast Asia,<br \/>\nshowing the interaction between Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions. The city was extensively<br \/>\nfortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. The Galle fort is a world heritage site and is the<br \/>\nlargest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. Leave for Yala.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afternoon safari to Yala National Park by jeeps.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yala National Park<\/strong> \u2013 is an important national park in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. This popular reserve has<br \/>\nmore than 400 wild Asian Elephants, which are relatively easy to see in this open habitat. Yala also has a dozen or so<br \/>\nLeopards, although seeing this largely nocturnal carnivore requires considerable luck. There are good numbers of<br \/>\nCrocodiles, Golden Jackals, Water Buffalo and Grey Iangurs amongst other large animals. The open parkland attracts<br \/>\nbirds pf prey such as White-bellied Sea Eagle Crested Serpent Eagle, Fish Eagle Booted eagle, Changeable Hawk Eagle<br \/>\nand the wetlands have waders and Painted Storks. Land birds are in abundance, and include Indian Roller, Indian<br \/>\nPeafowl, Malabar Pied Hornbill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dinner &amp; overnight stay (3* HOTEL HB) at Tissamaharama or simila<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DAY 02 \u2013 YALA \u2013 UDAWALAWE \u2013 BENTOTA<\/p>\n<p><strong>After breakfast visit Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The main objective of this facility is rehabilitation of orphaned baby elephants to ultimately release them<br \/>\nback into their natural habitat. Up to three elephants per week are killed in Sri Lanka due to conflicts with humans,<br \/>\noften leaving behind orphan calves. The elephants are kept at part of the Udawalawe National Park to maintain<br \/>\nfamiliarity with their habitat, but have access to both food and medical care.All care at the facility is by trained staff,<br \/>\nand efforts are made to minimize contact between elephants and humans to keep the elephants from becoming<br \/>\nacclimated to humans. Although visitors can watch the elephants being fed, they are not allowed to touch or otherwise<br \/>\ninteract with them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afternoon commence a Jeep Safari in Udawalawe National Park<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Udawalawe National Park<\/strong> lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces, in Sri Lanka. The national<br \/>\npark was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe reservoir on the<br \/>\nWalawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir. The reserve covers 30,821 hectares of land area<br \/>\nand was established on 30 June 1972. The park is 165 kilometres from Colombo. Udawalawe is an important habitat<br \/>\nfor water birds and Sri Lankan Elephants.
